A dedicated virtual-reality application for the Mediana archaeological site in Niš, giving users a fully immersive way to explore the ancient Roman complex. Developed within the “Active Protection of Cultural Heritage — Tabula Peutingeriana” project.
The build started from raw photogrammetry data processed on a high-performance workstation (RTX 4090 GPU). To run smoothly on the headset’s mobile chipset, the models were rigorously retopologized and their high-resolution textures baked down to 4K maps — drastically cutting polygon count while keeping a hyper-realistic look. The site detail itself was captured with 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS).
The app is primarily developed and tuned for Meta Quest 3, holding a constant high frame rate to eliminate visual fatigue and motion sickness even in longer sessions. Advanced lighting-rendering algorithms faithfully reproduce the ambience of the site for a real sense of physical presence, and the navigation system is designed to be intuitive for everyone from students to tourists.
